Service and Event Coordinator

Job Overview

Congregation Mishkan Shalom, a Reconstructionist synagogue in Philadelphia, PA, seeks a part-time Service and Event Coordinator. This is a part-time position (5 – 10 hours per week), with regular hours of 8:30 am – 1:00 pm each Saturday and one to two Friday evenings (6:00 – 9:30 pm) a month from September through June and additional periodic evenings.

The coordinator will mainly be supervised by the Director of Engagement and Communications, with some assistance from the Rabbi and Office Administrator and is primarily responsible for supporting the synagogue’s religious services and other community events. The Coordinator is the front-line person assisting clergy, staff, and volunteers in staffing holiday and Shabbat programming, events, and activities and ensuring the safety, security, and smooth operation of facilities and technology.

The ideal candidate is flexible, organized, resourceful, and willing to pitch in to accomplish a range of tasks. The Coordinator is warm and welcoming, actively supports Mishkan Shalom’s values and Statement of Principles, and possesses a customer service mentality.

Duties

Setup and clean up. You will be responsible for setting up and cleaning up services and events (with the help of volunteers when applicable). You will be the first person there and the last person to leave.
Welcoming members and guests. You will be responsible for greeting and checking in arriving members and guests, either on your own or with volunteers.
Technology set up and monitoring. You will be trained on our audio/visual system and streaming procedures and will set up and check all equipment and and manage the streaming of services and events. You will also be responsible for troubleshooting any difficulties and making sure equipment is stored properly.
Safety and security. You will be trained on and must review and be up to date on all safety practices and serve as a point of contact for members, volunteers, and staff concerning safety protocols and any issues that may arise, including health emergencies.
Volunteer liaison. You will be responsible for directing day-of volunteers, aiding them in their tasks, and serving as a point of contact for any needs or questions they may have during the event or service.

Requirements

Ability to welcome and interact with members, guests, visitors, and neighbors with kindness, attentiveness, and calm.
Ability to perform physical tasks of set up and clean up, including lifting boxes and some large furniture, carrying up to 30lbs, carrying items up and down stairs, locking and unlocking heavy doors, setting up food, and sitting at a desk.
Ability to take on authority role in case of emergency.
Ability to regularly work on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings/early afternoons. Access to reliable transportation and ability to arrive to work promptly.

Ideal Candidates:

Need not be Jewish but are energized by Mishkan Shalom’s values and excited to contribute to a progressive and inclusive community. Either prior knowledge of and/or curiosity and desire to learn about Jewish customs and observance are a plus.
Are potentially students or others who have some flexibility and could work occasional late afternoon and/or evening hours to staff events on an as-needed basis.
